What a pointless vehicle
The new Audi S5 Sportback is amongst the most pointless vehicles unveiled at Frankfurt's autoshow this year.
Those of you who see the nose of an Audi and ignore the rest may not be aware of the S5 coupé, a relatively sleek two door Audi about the size of the A6 saloon. Or the A8 we all remember from Ronin, a film made in the years when cars weren't a foot bigger each way than the needed to be.
With the S5 Sportback, Audi attempt to cram four doors into the coupe silhouette. Seriously, if you need four doors, get an A6, or even an A4. Likewise, the hideous BMW 5GT, which beats the saloon up with the ugly stick, only to plead "but there's more space".
I fear that in these times of adversity, car manufacturers are scared of just telling their design departments to keep themselves busy and are being pressured into approving vehicles for which no niche will ever rightfully exist.
